Appalachia (Pike County, Ohio)

Appalachia

Pike County Ohio is considered part of the
North Central region of the Appalachia.

Poverty is high.....

Jobs are scarce.....

My mother's family is from Eastern Kentucky.
My grandmother moved to Pike County, married my grandfather, and had a family.
When my mother was born there wasn't running water.
They had an outhouse.

They went to the woods to play......

My folks moved back down home and live on the original property where my mother grew up.

I recently visited and took a short drive to visit my aunt.

It is beautiful country.
Scattered among regular homes you can still view scenes of struggle.

My aunt lives 18 miles from my folks.

Here are a few captures from the drive there and back.

Halloween 2015

Halloween with friends.....

Such a good time.

All images captured using zone focusing.

After all.....

I did have a drink in the other hand.

Cycle Pub

We met some new friends.

They invited us to go on a Cycle Pub adventure.

We filled our growlers.....

We drank.....

We peddled.....

We drank.....

We chatted.....

We drank.....

We laughed.....

We drank.....

Tony's Crab Shack

Tony's Crab Shack

I stood in line and ordered clam chowder.
I ordered a drink.....
The guy at counter said "Lagunitas IPA?"
"I remember checking your ID last time."
I replied......
"Nope, you remember my twin brother."

After lunch I called my twin brother.....
He confirmed that he had ordered clam chowder there before.
He also said that he ordered a Lagunitas IPA.

Cheers!

Paradise

Paradise

".....Then the coal company came with the world's largest shovel.
And they tortured the timber and stripped all the land.
Well, they dug for their coal till the land was forsaken.
Then they wrote it all down as the progress of man."

"And daddy won't you take me back to Muhlenberg County,
Down by the Green River where Paradise lay.
Well, I'm sorry my son, but you're too late in asking.
Mister Peabody's coal train has hauled it away....."
